Principles of International Law Relevant for Consideration in the Design and Implementation of Trade-Related Climate Measures

With the urgent need to tackle the climate crisis, governments and stakeholders are exploring options to harness trade policies to achieve climate goals while advancing sustainable development. This WTO Public Forum session organized by TESS aimed to contribute to discussions on principles for the design and implementation of trade-related climate measures and policies.

Shared understandings around such principles could go a long way in reducing tensions and avoiding politically charged disputes at the WTO, while fostering inclusive cooperation on trade, climate and sustainable development. At this session, speakers introduced a new report by an international group of eminent experts on climate, environment, and trade law and general international law, which reviews principles of international law relevant for consideration by policymakers in the design and implementation of trade-related climate measures and policies. The session provided an opportunity for experts and stakeholders to discuss the findings of the report and how these principles can support cooperation on inclusive trade policies that support climate action and advance sustainable development.
