Fostering International Cooperation on Trade, Sustainable Agriculture, and Deforestation: The Importance of Smallholder Inclusion in Sustainable Agri-Food Chains

Alongside COP30, TESS and the FACT Dialogue hosted an event on the role of international cooperation on trade, sustainable agriculture, and deforestation in fostering inclusive, sustainable agri-food chains.

This event convened government representatives, stakeholders, and experts from various regions to explore pathways for international trade cooperation on inclusive, sustainable agri-food chains. It highlighted examples of collaboration with government and non-government actors aimed at advancing the sustainable production, consumption, and trade of agricultural commodities (e.g., soy, beef, cocoa, coffee, timber, and oil palm) while ensuring small-holders are not left behind.

Background

The agriculture sector accounts for up to 34% of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions when considering on-farm, land use, and land use change emissions, as well as pre- and post-production emissions, including storage, transport, packaging, processing, retail, and consumption. Despite being a critical source of food, feed, fuel, and livelihoods, the current food system fails to ensure food and nutrition security for all.

Sustainability in global agriculture and food systems remains a critical challenge within the global climate agenda. Key objectives include reducing GHG emissions and deforestation, building resilience, and improving the access, availability, and stability of food supplies, while simultaneously protecting ecosystems and restoring biodiversity. Trade and trade policies play a critical role in achieving these goals.
