Affordable Access to Technologies Vital to Achieving Climate Goals

Alongside COP30, UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD), International Institute of Sustainable Development (IISD), TESS, and Youth Negotiators will host an event on the role of trade and trade cooperation in enabling cheaper access to technologies vital to achieving climate goals.

Technology transfer has long been embedded in international treaties and United Nations outcome documents, especially in the context of climate mitigation and adaptation. However, technologies that are critical to advancing climate action often fail to reach those who need them most. Uptake remains limited due to a range of barriers.

Trade plays a pivotal role as a transmission mechanism—making technologies more affordable and accessible when domestic production is too costly or complex. While trade cooperation is essential, a broader strategy is needed to unlock equitable access.

This session will explore key factors that influence access to affordable climate technologies, including:

  • Cost of capital
  • Skills and workforce development
  • Regulatory environments
  • Investment flows
  • Trade policies

It will also highlight the role that the private, public, and academic sectors can play in supporting win-win solutions such as co-development, production, or partnerships on technology.
