This invitation-only informal roundtable will bring together a carefully curated group of about 25 trade and sustainability thought leaders from a range of organizations, IGOs, and academia to explore opportunities for shared engagement and action on a forward‑looking agenda for a reconfigured international trade system. Held in the run-up to the Fourteenth WTO Ministerial Conference (MC14), the discussion will reflect on strategies and opportunities in the context of ongoing WTO reform efforts.
The roundtable will seek to spur collective thinking in particular on:
- Key trade-related priorities, challenges, and opportunities relevant to the ongoing work of your organizations on climate change, nature, green economic transformation, and a just energy transition;
- Opportunities for catalyzing cross-organization engagement on trade and sustainability;
- Thinking about the mobilization required both short and longer-term to galvanize transformative change and who the leaders of this effort might be.
At a time of significant turmoil in global politics and trade, action on environmental and development imperatives has never been more urgent. While aware of the multiple challenges facing the international trading system, we convene this meeting convinced that most countries recognize the importance of enhanced cooperation on trade and sustainability, and are willing to explore how to advance. Alongside, we are encouraged by the momentum and energy of sustainability advocates—from business, finance, NGOs, and IGOs—already working for the transition to a greener, fairer global economy.
