TESS is proud to support the work of the co-chairs of the High Ambition Coalition to End Plastic Pollution as negotiations on the global plastics treaty advance.
The High Ambition Coalition was formed by a group of like-minded countries following the adoption of the historic resolution 5/14 at the United Nations Environment Assembly in March 2022 to launch negotiations on a legally binding international instrument on plastic pollution. The coalition is co-chaired by Norway and Rwanda and has 59 members from a broad diversity of regions and levels of economic development.
The High Ambition Coalition to End Plastic Pollution is committed to developing an ambitious international legally binding instrument based on a comprehensive approach that addresses the full life cycle of plastics. The shared ambition is to end plastic pollution by 2040. The coalition has issued two ministerial statements outlining their priorities for the treaty, one in the lead up to INC-1 and one for INC-2.
TESS began supporting the work of the High Ambition Coalition in the lead up to the second session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee to develop an international legally binding instrument on plastic pollution, including in the marine environment (INC-2), which took place from 29 May to 2 June 2023 in Paris, France.
INC-2 concluded by mandating the INC Chair to prepare a “zero draft” of the new treaty for consideration at INC-3 in Nairobi, Kenya in November 2023.
As part of TESS work on reducing plastic pollution, we look forward to supporting the High Ambition Coalition’s co-chairs and members over the coming months as the negotiations on the global plastics treaty advance.
