TESS Contributes to WTO Thematic Session on Trade-Related Climate Measures

On 4 February 2024, the WTO Committee on Trade and Environment (CTE) held a fourth Thematic Session on the topic of “Trade-Related Climate Measures.” At the session, TESS was invited to contribute to the panel on “Enhancing International Cooperation in Standards Setting and Implementation” with a presentation on considerations for further engagement.

Following a previous Thematic Session on Trade-Related Climate Measures held on 10 October 2024 and a subsequent informal meeting and consultations, the fourth CTE Thematic Session on Trade-Related Climate Measures was structured around two key themes:

  • The development dimension, including impacts, challenges, concerns, and opportunities for developing countries; and
  • Ways to promote interoperability and coherence of trade-related climate measures.

TESS was invited to contribute with a summary of issues raised in relation to enhancing international cooperation in standards setting and implementation and considerations for members regarding possible areas for further follow-up at the WTO.

In our presentation, we identified those areas where cooperation is needed based on the challenges members raise and reviewed a range of possible types of cooperation members could consider at the WTO. We also reviewed existing suggestions from members on possible areas for further follow up to enhance cooperation on trade-related climate measures.

Our presentation is available for download.

More information on the CTE is available here.
