TESS, The Pew Charitable Trusts, Center for International Environmental Law, International Union for Conservation of Nature, and International Institute of Sustainable Development held this session on how international cooperation on trade could support efforts to reduce plastic pollution.
Panelists addressed the relevance of trade and trade policy in the fight against plastic pollution, discussed specific ways in which cooperation around trade can make a difference in reducing plastic pollution, and identified concrete options and pathways for pursuing such cooperation, including in the context of ongoing work within the WTO’s Dialogue on Plastics Pollution. Discussions also covered possible synergies between negotiations for a new internationally binding global instrument to address plastic pollution, and the implementation of the Basel Convention’s Plastic Waste Amendments, and work at the WTO.
