TESS and Minderoo Foundation hosted this informal roundtable discussion on the findings of the Minderoo-Monaco Commission on Plastics and Human Health in the context of the global plastics treaty negotiations, recently published during Monaco Oceans Week 2023.
Participants included government representatives covering the plastics treaty negotiations, health, and trade issues relevant to plastic pollution as well as a number of experts from the WHO and stakeholder organizations.
Agenda
Lead authors of the commission presented the findings of their work, which covers
- the hazards of plastics to human health across the plastics life cycle;
- a first estimate of the contribution of plastics to the global burden of disease;
- the disproportionate impacts of plastics on disadvantaged populations, vulnerable people and children;
- the effects of plastics on the environment, in particular the ocean.
